Moth Orchid (Phalaenopsis) — common problems

Find the symptom you're seeing for the likely cause and fix.

Wrinkled / limp leaves

Likely cause: Kept too dry so roots shrivel — or roots rotted in soggy compost.

Fix: Water based on medium (weekly for bark, when top dries for moss); never leave roots soggy or bone dry.

Yellowing leaves / leaf drop

Likely cause: Ethylene gas exposure or overwatering/root rot.

Fix: Keep away from ripening fruit and fumes; improve drainage; let plant drain fully after watering.

Bud blast (buds drop before opening)

Likely cause: Temperature swings, low humidity, or sudden environmental change.

Fix: Keep warm and stable (away from radiators and drafts); maintain humidity.

Failure to rebloom

Likely cause: Needs a cooler trigger.

Fix: Move to a spot ~5°C cooler for about a month; cut spent stem above a healthy lower node.

Pests (mealybugs, aphids, scale)

Likely cause: Common orchid pests.

Fix: Inspect and treat; avoid water in the crown to prevent bacterial rot.
