Calathea — common problems

Find the symptom you're seeing for the likely cause and fix.

Brown leaf tips/edges

Likely cause: Low humidity / dry air (and sensitivity to chlorine and fluoride in tap water).

Fix: Raise humidity (pebble tray, bathroom, grouping, misting); use rainwater or filtered water.

Curling / faded leaves

Likely cause: Insufficient light.

Fix: Move to a brighter spot out of direct sun, or add grow lights.

Wilting

Likely cause: Inconsistent watering or poor drainage.

Fix: Keep compost evenly moist in growth; in winter let the surface dry but never fully dry out.

Oedema (water-soaked patches)

Likely cause: Compost too wet, especially in winter.

Fix: Reduce winter watering; improve air circulation.

Spider mites (speckled leaves, webbing)

Likely cause: Low-humidity conditions.

Fix: Raise humidity; inspect regularly and treat if needed.
