African Violet — common problems

Find the symptom you're seeing for the likely cause and fix.

Petiole rot (rust-colored spots where stems touch pot)

Likely cause: Fertilizer salts accumulating on the pot rim and soil surface.

Fix: Avoid over-fertilizing; use rainwater; line the pot rim with tape or foil; flush soil with fresh water.

Ring / line leaf spots

Likely cause: Cold water contacting the leaves.

Fix: Keep leaves dry when watering; use room-temperature water.

Crown & root rot (mushy center, drooping leaves)

Likely cause: Excess watering, poor drainage, or planting too deep (water molds).

Fix: Use sterilized soil; ensure good drainage; discard severely affected plants.

Reduced flowering

Likely cause: Inadequate light (thin dark leaves with long petioles), low temps, wet soil, or dry air.

Fix: Provide bright indirect light; maintain warmth, drainage, and humidity.

Cyclamen mites / mealybugs

Likely cause: Pest infestation.

Fix: Isolate; remove mealybugs with rubbing alcohol; treat mites with insecticidal soap, sulfur, or neem at 3-day intervals.
